The Area of Epidemiology, Prevention and Cancer
Control is constituted by the Service of Epidemiology and Cancer
Register and by the Prevention and Cancer Control Service. Its
lines of work include the organization and provision of certain
preventive services, as for example breast or colon cancers screening,
or the maintenance of the Hospital Tumour Register ICO/CSUB, the
epidemiological research on factors of risk of cancer (viral origin
of the cancers, cancer and diet, tobacco and cancer), the research
on the use of resources in oncological assistance and the monitoring
of the population. The Area collaborates in research under way
with other institutions, methodological support to the population
registers of cancer in Catalonia and collaborates with organizations
of volunteers and of mutual aid in the prevention and sanitary
education on cancer. |

The Institut Català d'Oncologia created
the Unit of Clinical Research in 1997, with staff with a university
degree, dedicated exclusively to supervise and to coordinate the
Clinical Research in the Institution. This Unit is under the ICO
Direction.
The Unit of Clinical Research carries out two basic types of clinical trials: |

Premature clinical trials: phase I and II processes
conducted under the keys of a Program of new medicines development
and in a pharmaco-dynamics Laboratory. |

Advanced Clinical trials: phase II, phase III and phase
IV. |
