The Service of Epidemiology and Registration of the Cancer carries out research and studies related to the causes, the premature diagnosis and the prevention of the cancer. It works in close connection with national and international networks of research, and maintains a privileged contribution with the International Agency of Research on Cancer (IARC), which is the branch of research on cancer of the World’s Health Organization.
The Epidemiological Area maintains and serves the Tumours Register of the university hospital of Bellvitge and collaborates with the Registers of population Tumours in Catalonia.

The most important lines of research are:

The viral origin of some human tumours, including studies of prevention by means of specific vaccinations.

The interaction between the environmental factors and the human genome in the origin of the cancer. The studies on colon cancer and diet stand out.

Studies of individual sensitivity to the carcinogenic factors and studies of the hereditary cancer, among which we want to point out the studies on breast cancer in young women.

The Service of Epidemiology and Cancer Register offers methodological support and contribution to the research into the population registers of cancer in Catalonia and the Balearic islands.
