The programme offers:

Evaluation of, and advice on, the risk of developing this illness
Information about the illness, the treatments and the genetic studies
Stablishing the most suitable preventive courses of action or treatments
Providing both individuals and families with the necessary support in order to face the illness
Deciding whether to carry out a genetic test


Besides the assistance aspect, the genetic counselling of ICO carries out research, teaching, training and divulging.

Research:
The objective is to develop:

Basic and clinic research lines into the hereditary predisposition to cancer;
a network of interest into hereditary cancer
active cooperation with national and international groups


Teaching, training and research:
The objectives are:

To make the knowledge about hereditary cancer and genetic counselling known in order to increase the sensitization of medical professionals and population in general towards these matters.
Continuous training of the members of the genetic counselling Unit.
Training for the residents, doctors and nurses interested in the genetic counselling.
