A group of experts of the Instituto
Nacional de Cancerología of Mexico visits this week the different
facilities and services of the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO)
A team of doctors and nurses of the Instituto Nacional de Cancerología
of Mexico, led by Abelardo Meneses, medical manager of the institution,
has come to Catalonia to see the different facilities of ICO and
share experiences with the Catalan specialists. The visit started
on Monday
and will last until Friday.
During their stay, the experts will visit the facilities in Hospitalet
and Badalona and will get to know, among others, the Palliative Cares
and radiation therapy services, and the functional units of breast
cancer, bone tumours and sarcoma, nervous system and lung cancer.
In return, Abelardo Meneses will explain the different projects that
the
Instituto Nacional de Cancerología is preparing in order to
improve the quality of assistance tof the cancer patients in Mexico.
The meeting will also bring about the establishment of links and
projects of collaboration between both institutions. One of the suggestions
is that the Mexican professionals study courses thanks to the on-line
training service conducted by ICO’s e-oncology:
(
www.e-oncologia.org) and that the Mexican nurses come to Catalonia
to study the specialization in oncology.
The Instituto Nacional de Cancerología, which offers specialized
medical assistance to all the cancer patients in Mexico, depends
on the Mexican Government.
It assists 4,500 new cases a year and receives 170,000 annual visits.
Moreover, it is the centre of reference and the institution that manages
the policies related to cancer in Mexico.
