More than 800 people participate
in the Congress ‘Interdisciplinary oncology:
10 years of
the Institut Català d’Oncologia
Between April
26th. and 28th. the Congress on interdisciplinary oncology has
taken place in Sitges, organized by the Institut Català d’Oncologia,
as a celebration of its tenth anniversary. It consisted of three
days of debate and analysis of the evolution of the treatment of
cancer in Catalonia. Specialists of all the areas have attended
it and participated.
The fight against cancer that has been carried out from ICO in
these 10 years has been discussed at the congress from different
points
of view: cancer treatments, research, drugs, the human face of
cancer, the quality and the continuous improvement in the survival
to cancer.
The ‘Consellera de Salut’, Marina Geli, and the ‘regidor
de benestar i salut’ , Sr. Millàn, attended the
official opening of the Congress. The Consellera, Marina Geli,
congratulated all the professionals on making the task of the
Institut Català d’Oncologia possible and made special
emphais on the importance of the development of the ICO interdisciplinary
model of spreading the ICO network to all Catalonia.
Marina Geli stated at the opening that: “the creation of
a monographic centre dedicated to cancer has meant an important
improvement regarding the patients’ assistance, the research
and the advances achieved in oncology research, while at the
same time it meant a substancial progress in the service that
the citizens receive from the public health centres.”
Many themes have been discussed during the three days that the
congress lasted. The debate on “The human face of cancer” stands
out among them; in it participated patients, journalists, experts
in bioethics, entities and doctors to answer the main questions
of patients and citizens about cancer. It is also necessary to
mention some twenty workshops that took place there.
During the
Congress there were also three sessions dedicated to the presentation
of results of the 10 years of ICO. These
results are specially significant because of the continuous increase
in the survival to cancer. The highest survival correspond to
breast cancer, limphatic leukaemia and the multiple myeloma or
bone-marrow cancer.
The closing session of the congress was carried
out with a lecture on the future of the interdisciplinary model
of the ICO, by the
director of the ICO, Josep Maria Borràs, who took advantage
of the event to anounce his resignation as ICO director and his
new position as head of the ‘Pla Director d’Oncologia
de Catalunya’ (Catalan Oncology Director Plan).
The official
closing was also attended by Josep Ganduxé,
co-manager of the sanitary region of Barcelona – Servei
Català de la Salut, Joaquim Esperalba, new ICO director,
J.R. Germà, president of the ICO Congress, and Ramon López,
president and managing director of the Institut Català d’Oncologia.
The event was closed with the show of a video commemorating the
10 years of the ICO and a dinner for the 500 workers of the three
centres of the Institut Català d’Oncologia.
