Doctor Xavier Bosch obtains the Jaume I prize of Medical
Research
The head of the service of epidemiology and cancer register of
the Institut Català d’Oncologia, Xavier Bosch, has
been awarded the prize Jaume I of Medical Research, given by the
Generalitat Valenciana . The jury of this prize, made of 18 Nobel
Prize winners, has awarded doctor Bosch for his improvement in
the study of the relation of the virus of the humn papiloma and
the uterus neck cancer, essential for the production of the first
preventive vaccine against this type of cancer. Xavier Bosch has
been one of the 6 researchers recognised in the 2006 edition, with
a prize endowed with €100.000.

Besides this distinction, doctor Xavier Bosch has also received
recently from American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical
Pathology - ASCCP the award: "Distinguished Scientific
Achievement Award" for his contribution to the advances
in the knowledge of epidemiology of cervical cancer, how
the illness progresses, clinic evaluation and treatment of
women affected by the pathologies associated to the Virus
of Human Papiloma. This prize is the highest rank of those
awarded by ASCCP. We would also like to mention the “Distinguished
Service Award” given by the European Research Organization
on Genital Infection and Neoplasia – EUROGIN for his
scientific career and his contribution to the fight against
cervial cancer.
Cervical cancer is the most frequent among feminine
population, and the first cause of premature death among
the women in
poor countries. The Service of Epidemiology and cancer register
of ICO, led by Dr. Xavier Bosch, has researched into and
evaluated the efficacy of this new vaccine, which foresees
the infection by the virus of human papiloma, a virus of
sexual transmission that causes 90% of the cases of cervical
cancer, according to research coordinated by Dr. Bosch. Precisaly,
this month of June the U.S.A. have authorized the vaccine
to prevent cervial cancer, which is expected to be commercialised
in Spain within a year.
